Agricultural Recovery Case Studies

Across supply chains, half of global food loss occurs postharvest, with the agriculture sector seeing the highest rates of loss. Much of this loss is of highly nutritious foods —fruits, vegetables and pulses — resulting in lost nutrients for people and lost income for producers, many of whom face food insecurity themselves.

Food banks’ agricultural recovery programs partner with farms of all sizes to recover surplus food and distribute it to communities facing hunger. These programs are one of the most effective ways to get healthy food to more people and reduce food loss.

The following series of case studies explore agricultural recovery programs led by food banks in Colombia, Kenya and the Philippines.
