Le Réseau mondial des banques alimentaires et Walmart lancent l'initiative $5 millions pour renforcer l'infrastructure mondiale des banques alimentaires

OCTOBER 26, 2026 (CHICAGO) —The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN) and Walmart are pleased to announce The Global Food Recovery Catalyst, a two-year, $5 million initiative to increase food recovery and strengthen food banking systems in North America, Latin America, and South Africa.

While millions of people face food insecurity every day, almost one-third of all food in the world goes to waste. Food banks work with retailers like Walmart to recover nutritious, surplus food — thereby preventing waste and its environmental impact — and deliver it to people in need.

As a long-time product donor to members of The Global FoodBanking Network, Walmart understands the challenges of efficiently getting surplus food from stores’ shelves to families’ tables. As such, funds granted through The Global Food Recovery Catalyst will improve food banks’ infrastructure, technology and data systems, operational capacity, donor–food bank partnerships, and local donation policies, in addition to providing opportunities for peer learning and innovation.

The initiative will support food banks in seven markets:

Support for these food banks will increase food access for 1.4 million people across these markets. In addition, Banques alimentaires Canada, BAMX (Mexico), and Banco de Alimentos de Guatemala will participate through GFN programming, technical assistance, knowledge sharing, and broader network engagement. In total, 10 food banks across nine countries will benefit from capacity strengthening and implementation support.

“As we mark 20 years since the founding of The Global FoodBanking Network, Walmart has been a consistent supporter as we have grown to serve over 40 million people across more than 50 countries,” said Lisa Moon, president and CEO of GFN. “As we look to the future, this investment from Walmart goes beyond serving the immediate needs of people facing food insecurity. It strengthens the foundations of food banks and gives them the tools to be more resilient and impactful in the long term.”

“Food banks are essential to helping put food on the table for families and neighbors around the world,” said Dr. Marvin Carr-Ligons, Senior Director, National Foundation, Walmart.“This initiative will strengthen the systems, infrastructure and local relationships that make food recovery possible, so more good food can reach people who need it.”

Walmart is the largest product donor to members of The Global FoodBanking Network, delivering 56 million kilograms of food to members in 2025.
