Since March 2020, Guayaquil, Ecuador has been hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. Banco de Alimentos Diakonía has dramatically scaled up its food assistance by increasing the number of beneficiary organizations it supports. It now reaches more than 1 million people, a more than 30-fold increase compared to 2019. While schools are closed, Diakonía distributes emergency food boxes to families with children who previously benefited from the school breakfast program.
Banco de Alimentos de Quito is serving an additional 12,000 people through multiple new distribution partners, including government organizations, indigenous population groups, and organizations from other cities or towns. The food bank is also working alongside international federation Fe y Alegría provincial to deliver food to parents of families in educational centers.
