“Through [GFN's] Knowledge Networks, I’ve met people who work in my field,” said Carol Mérida, manager of donations and new projects for Desarrollo en Movimiento, the newest GFN member food bank in Latin America, located in Guatemala. “The greatest value I see in the Knowledge Networks is the many innovative solutions that have come out of generating ideas with peers, and how these solutions can be adapted for different situations.”Through dialogue with other food bank staff in the Product Sourcing Knowledge Network, Mérida learned a strategy to extend the shelf life of a product her food bank receives.“In Mexico, they use machines to make tortillas with surplus corn flour,” Mérida said. “One of the communities we serve told us they use the green bananas we distribute to make tortillas—so we are looking to implement [Red de Bancos de Alimentos de México’s] strategy and make banana flour with some of the 30,000 kilos of green bananas that are donated to us each month. Since bananas can ripen quickly or go bad, it will be great to distribute a more shelf-stable product like banana flour in our food kits.”📸 Left: Bananas are a staple item in the food kits distributed by Desarrollo en Movimiento (DEM). An estimated 768 million people are facing hunger globally.

Yet, nearly one-third of all food produced is lost or wasted, ultimately contributing to climate change.

And our food systems account for 34 percent of all greenhouse gas emissions.

That's why we can't talk about building more sustainable food systems without talking about climate action.
Today, in many countries around the world, familie Today, in many countries around the world, families will celebrate Mother's Day and honor the influence of mothers.

We are so honored to be surrounded by incredible mothers leading and supporting local food banks, and by food banks who are supporting the unique needs of mothers everywhere. 💜

Give a shout out in the comments to the moms you're celebrating today and every day!

Does this remind you of your local grocery store? Does this remind you of your local grocery store?

It's a food bank! Walking into one of Korea Foodbank’s Food Markets might remind you of your local grocery store—except at these markets, items are free.

Since 2005, Korea Foodbank’s Food Markets have offered families and individuals choices in the food they receive, while providing toiletries, clothes, cleaning supplies, and more.

And with 130 markets across South Korea, individuals can find a market that is close to their homes.

💬 "The strength of the food market is that the user can choose food directly and that the user's accessibility is enhanced by the establishment of a food market near the residential area," said Jinsoo Lee, manager of the Foodmarket in the Jongro-gu district of Seoul, South Korea.

Many food banks around the world use similar market models to ensure that people can access food easily, safely, and with dignity.

📸 Staff at the Jongro-gu Foodmarket stock shelves with a variety of products including fresh produce and meat, prepared foods, toiletries, clothing, and cleaning products.
Nutritionists play a major role at food banks. I Nutritionists play a major role at food banks.

In fact, many food banks have on-staff or volunteer nutritionists that:

-Develop nutrition education programs for all ages

-Host nutrition, cooking, and health workshops

-Monitor the health of community members who receive assistance from a food bank

And so much more!

Thank you to all of the food bank nutritionists who help more communities access safe, wholesome food!

The food bank model isn't one size fits all. Loca The food bank model isn't one size fits all.

Local leaders are crucial to addressing hunger because they have a deep understanding of their community's specific challenges, resources, culture, and food system.

That's why the food bank model can look different from community to community.

In Madagascar, more than 1.3 million people are facing severe hunger due to drought and crop failure caused by climate change.

Humanitarian aid has significantly increased in the country, but there are still many remote communities that need food assistance. That's where GFN member Banque Alimentaire de Madagascar comes in.

The food bank and its extensive network of volunteers partner with @worldfoodprogramme and @LionsClubs to distribute monthly food parcels, with a special focus on the nutritional needs of mothers and children under the age of five. The parcels include enriched flours and produce purchased from small-holder farmers in the region.

What do Mexico, Indonesia, Australia, and South Af What do Mexico, Indonesia, Australia, and South Africa have in common?

One answer is that each country has committed to accelerating action that reduces food loss and waste in their communities through voluntary agreements.

From farms to food manufacturers to retailers to food banks, these agreements bring together actors from across the food supply chain to commit to actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions caused by food waste.

Food banks are natural partners for agreements like this as they are experts in sourcing and redistributing safe, surplus food to communities facing hunger.

In Mexico, GFN member @RedBAMX leads one of these agreements called Pacto por la Comida.

The agreement aims to reduce food loss and waste in Mexico by up to 50 percent in the next 10 years.

GFN member Fundación Banco de Alimentos Nicaragua partners with Las Gaviotas Asociacion of Women Producers (ASOMUPRO) to support women farmers in Condega, a rural agricultural municipality in northern Nicaragua.

ASOMUPRO provides:

– technical agricultural assistance for women involved in food production

– seed funding for women looking to start small businesses

– a supportive network of women facing similar challenges

The food bank provides almost 1,000 women with food parcels every month, which supplements ASOMUPRO’s work by allowing women to focus more efforts on their vocation.

Until every woman has access to the food and resources they need to live healthy and productive lives, food banks like Fundación Banco de Alimentos Nicaragua and organizations like ASOMUPRO will continue these crucial programs that support women and girls.

Food loss and waste is happening all around us. W Food loss and waste is happening all around us.

When it's being produced, packed or transported, at restaurants or grocery stores, and in our own homes.

What's the big deal?

➡️ If 25 percent of the food currently lost or wasted globally could be saved, it would be enough to feed the 870 million people facing hunger in the world (@UNEP).

➡️ As wasted food decomposes in landfills, it contributes 8 to 10 percent of the world’s greenhouse gases—ultimately intensifying climate change and causing further fractures in our food system.
