Feeding School Children: South Africa
Targeted Area
Expand existing school feeding program in Cape Town region
The Situation
The Lunch Buddies program is an initiative aimed at providing students from underprivileged schools with a nutritious lunch. Students from more privileged backgrounds are asked to bring an extra sandwich on a given day of the school week, and the extra sandwiches are handed in at a central collection point. The food bank issues a truck that collects them, adds a piece of fruit to each one and distributes the contributions to schools in disadvantaged areas.
GFN’s Commitment
To help alleviate child hunger in the Cape Town area, GFN is working to:
- Supplement the government’s limited National School Nutrition Program in primary schools via Lunch Buddies
- Provide sandwiches on weekends and holidays
- Obtain corporate support.
