Country Projects: United Kingdom
Overview
The FareShare Community Food Network has been operating since 2004 and has 12 food depots throughout the United Kingdom. In addition to providing quality food to people in need, FareShare also operates a program that provides education and vocational training opportunities intended to help disadvantaged people rebuild their lives.
The network includes more than 530 community organizations. In 2008/2009, the food redistributed by FareShare contributed to more than 7.4 million meals. Every day, an average of 29,000 people benefit from this organization’s services.
FareShare is embarking on a vision to expand its impact five-fold. The network aims to:
- Open 18 new depots
- Provide nutritious food to 2,500 community organizations and charities
- Redistribute 20,000 tons of food per year
- Support 100,000 vulnerable people every day with food, training and education
- Offer 6,000 volunteer opportunities.
GFN’s Involvement
FareShare became a member of GFN in 2007. We have provided their representatives with scholarships to the H-E-B/GFN Food Bank Leadership Institute and worked with them to expand their food sourcing partnerships.
