Country Projects: Australia

Overview

Foodbank Australia is the largest hunger relief charity in Australia. Foodbank and its partners work together to tackle what the organization calls “the hidden problem” of hunger in that nation. Some 13 percent of Australian adults and 15 percent of children live in poverty, and the numbers are growing.

Foodbank helps feed more than 60,000 Australians a day, half of them children who would otherwise go to school without breakfast or to bed without dinner. That number totals roughly 23 million meals a year.

This national organization has distribution centers in five states (NSW, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria and Western Australia) and satellite warehouses in six regional centers (Mt Gambier, Dandenong, Albany, Geraldton, Bunbury and Mandurah). Some 2,500 welfare agencies rely on Foodbank as their pantry, and the organization is the food and grocery industry’s chosen distributor of donations.

GFN’s Involvement

Foodbank Australia became a member of GFN in June 2009. We look forward to working with the organization to expand food banking in their beautiful country as well as in the Pacific Rim region.
