Donor Spotlight

Cargill’s Major Gift

At The Global FoodBanking Network (GFN), we are truly grateful for every dollar, every pallet of food and every volunteer hour donated in the name of solving the global food crisis. Our food banks around the world rely on generosity in any degree to address the needs of the growing ranks of people who are at risk because of chronic hunger.

Some donations, however, rise to the level of the extraordinary. Such is the case with Cargill’s unprecedented gift of $1 million to GFN in February 2009. The company awarded the gift as a response to food price inflation and the worldwide economic crisis.

Cargill’s donation will help us:

  • Feed 500,000 school children over the next three years in Argentina, Colombia, India, Jordan and South Africa under our commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative
  • Provide a much-needed infusion of resources for our existing partner networks and food banks in the form of food sourcing and the development of infrastructure.

Cargill also made significant gifts to other hunger relief organizations that support food banks across the United States.

In 2008, Cargill supported community efforts in more than 50 countries with a record $44 million in contributions and $19 million in future commitments. Those efforts include partnerships with organizations such as CARE and the World Food Programme that focus on long-term solutions to health and nutrition, education and environmental issues.
